Meal #43: Linner/Dunch

Wow. France is not going well. We got up bright and early after a long, hungry and thirsty day of travel the day before and headed to Lyon to return our rental car. Everything was going fine, until traffic came to a complete stop on the A 43. At first we thought, “no big deal. It won’t take them that long to clean up the accident”. Then after two hours stuck in one spot on a hot, French motorway with no water, we thought, “Oh my god! We’re gonna die out here”. Finally after 2 1/2 hours, police came through and directed everyone to slowly exit the motorway via a narrow, gravel shoulder. We were so relieved, but concerned we would have to pay the €150 late return fee on the rental.

We rushed to Lyon and arrived two hours late. Thankfully, the clerk was very kind and didn’t charge us the fee. She had heard about the accident. We still don’t know what happened, but it must have been really bad:/ By the time everything was settled we were exhausted. We stopped by a small convenience store-like grocery and picked up a couple things for a simple dinner. Why is it so difficult to get three squares around here?!? We had arugula salads with apple and shallot balsamic vinaigrette. Fried eggs and crusty French bread with country pâté. Not bad.

Meal #30: Dinner

Our last meal in Dublin and it was excellent! We went to Green 19. The restaurant had a great atmosphere, excellent service, and even better food. We were all very happy with our meals. Unfortunately, I’m dealing with a cold, so I stuck to simple soupy type fare – tea, soup, salad (I need vitamins:) Adam had pan seared duck breast with celeriac purée, mashed potatoes and black berries. The duck was cooked perfectly- juicy and medium rare with a crispy exterior. The mashed potatoes were smooth and creamy and served with grilled baby leeks. I had the cream of mushroom soup. It was earthy, creamy and served very hot- perfect! The fresh green salad was crisp and perfectly sour with malt vinegar and green tomatoes. We finished our great meal with a perfectly crunchy-creamy creme brûlée. Ireland, it’s been great. Thanks!

Meal #26: Dinner

New best dinner winner!!! Wow! We’re staying at Ballygally Castle in Northern Ireland. Beautiful! We had dinner at the castle restaurant. We started with a fresh-made pepper roll with butter. I had a selection of County Down heritage pork. It was SO amazing. The pork belly was crispy and silky with a perfect salty, herbal stuffing. The pork chop was perfectly cooked with an awesome charred exterior. The pork was totally different than our bland American pork. It has so much “animal” flavor. The salad was fresh and crispy with a lovely mustard vinaigrette. The potato croquette was crisp on the outside and smooth and creamy inside. I loved the creamed Savoy cabbage. The Irish really know how to make cabbage! We finished with locally made Irish Ice cream. Wow!!! It was sponge cake with honey, chocolate, and raspberry-lavender ice cream. Awesome!

Meal #66: Second Lunch

Italian salad with prosciutto and tomatoes and mozzarella, Paris, France

This was a delicious second lunch at a cute little brasserie near Le Tour Eiffel.  The greens were fresh and crisp.  The prosciutto was tender and salty, complemented perfectly by the soft basil and olive oil drizzled mozzarella.  The vinaigrette was emulsified, giving it a creamy texture that tasted excellent.

Meal #64: Dinner

Fish and cream in a little pot with salad and bread, Bruuge, Belgium

This was not the best dinner ever.  The fish and cream sauce was okay on flavor, but the fish was very overcooked.  The bread was just some white sandwich bread, not so great.  But the salad was very nice with tender lettuce and sweet corn, sprouts and tomato, carrots and endive.  It was not a terrible meal, but I hope to never have to eat it again.

Ham and cheese in a little pot with tomatoes and wheat bread, Bruuge, Belgium

This was a very strange but tasty dish.  The hot gratinèed ham was delicious spread on the chewy bread.

Meal #63: Lunch

Mushroom and bacon salad, Bruuge, Belgium

This salad jumped right out of the menu at me.  Who wouldn’t want to eat a mushroom and bacon salad?  The salad was made up of a buttery lettuce somewhat like Boston, tomato wedges, cucumber slices and crunchy croutons with a creamy dressing.  The salad itself was a good salad, but then they decided to make it an awesome salad so they topped it with a heaping pile of warm mushrooms and bacon.  The bacon was awesome, like it always is when it’s actual bacon, from the belly.  And the mushrooms were heavy and earthy.  It was an incredible salad, one of the best salads I’ve ever had!

Shrimp croquette with salad and bread, Bruuge, Belgium

Charity’s first course was a shrimp croquette with salad.  The croquette was hot and creamy on the inside, with a really crispy exterior, and very delicate flavors, which pared very nicely with the salad and simple vinaigrette.

Flemish beef stew with apple compote and frites, Bruuge, Belgium

I had no idea what to expect when I ordered Flemish stew.  I was pleasantly surprised.  The tender chunks of beef were in a really great silky ale and beef gravy.  I would have appreciated some carrots, onions, and peas in the stew.  The frites were crispy and salty.  The apple compote was a nice sweet relief from the very salty stew and frites.  Overall, a very strange lunch combination, however, very pleasing and I will definitely try to make this at home.

Meal #47: Second Lunch

Prawn layered salad with apple juice, Sainsburys, Oxford, UK
This was a small take away lunch I grabbed from Sainsburys to eat on the Oxford Tube into London.  The prawns were super tiny, and a bit fishy, but hey, it’s from a grocery store after all.  It wasn’t so bad with the sauce that was included, it was sort of like salad creme, but slightly better.  For anyone who doesn’t know what salad creme is, it’s basically a sweetened mayonnaise, and your only option for salad dressing in England.  The apple juice was the best part of the meal, just some plain old apple juice, 35p worth of pure nature.

Meal #38: Dinner

Ham and three mushroom pizza with Caesar salad, Pizza Express, London, UK

My first trip to the famous Pizza Express! While the name sounds like it would be a hole-in-the-wall take-away place, it’s actually a nice sit-down restaurant. I had half of a three-mushroom and ham pizza. The crust was thin and crispy with small charred patches that were a small burst of flavour. The sauce and cheese were thin, which was good because it left the focus on the three types of mushroom and the thin slices of salty ham. The Caesar salad was great, with a smooth and creamy homemade dressing and thin slices of anchovy. A very good pizza dinner right before Comedy of Errors at The Globe.
