Meal #63: Lunch

Mushroom and bacon salad, Bruuge, Belgium

This salad jumped right out of the menu at me.  Who wouldn’t want to eat a mushroom and bacon salad?  The salad was made up of a buttery lettuce somewhat like Boston, tomato wedges, cucumber slices and crunchy croutons with a creamy dressing.  The salad itself was a good salad, but then they decided to make it an awesome salad so they topped it with a heaping pile of warm mushrooms and bacon.  The bacon was awesome, like it always is when it’s actual bacon, from the belly.  And the mushrooms were heavy and earthy.  It was an incredible salad, one of the best salads I’ve ever had!

Shrimp croquette with salad and bread, Bruuge, Belgium

Charity’s first course was a shrimp croquette with salad.  The croquette was hot and creamy on the inside, with a really crispy exterior, and very delicate flavors, which pared very nicely with the salad and simple vinaigrette.

Flemish beef stew with apple compote and frites, Bruuge, Belgium

I had no idea what to expect when I ordered Flemish stew.  I was pleasantly surprised.  The tender chunks of beef were in a really great silky ale and beef gravy.  I would have appreciated some carrots, onions, and peas in the stew.  The frites were crispy and salty.  The apple compote was a nice sweet relief from the very salty stew and frites.  Overall, a very strange lunch combination, however, very pleasing and I will definitely try to make this at home.

Meal #25: Lunch

Prosciutto, cheese, tomato, basil, and mayo on artisan bread, Pret, Oxford, UK

I ate at Pret, again.  Sorry.  It’s so good and they believe in sustainability, local  food, and keeping preservatives/steroids/dyes/enhancers/etc out of the food.  They don’t have organic food, which kind of sucks, but all of their food is all-natural, which is the next best thing.  ALL of their packaging is recycled and recyclable!  I wish we had Pret A Manger in the US.

Oh yeah, and I ate a sandwich.  It was very good.  The bread, baked fresh daily, was crunchy and slightly salted.  The prosciutto was so smooth and also salty.  The tomatoes were fresh and sweet, and the basil, even though I normally don’t like basil so much, was a good addition to the party in my mouth.  The perfect amount of homemade mayonnaise tied everything together.  The sparkling apple was simple, sweet, and had real apple flavor, (probably all the apple juice they put in it.)  I’m so glad I found this place!  It will be hard for me to stay away from it.

Meal #18: Dinner

The new chicken temptation, Subway, Oxford, UK

My pence-pinching friends and I were hungry while hanging out at Stu’s, and they wouldn’t go anywhere else but Subway for food.  They love it.  I got the new chicken temptation.  It was a breaded and baked chicken breast.  For Subway, it really wasn’t too terrible, but it was still Subway.  When I told him black olives, he put three slices of olives on my sub, three.  A little bit stingy on the toppings over here.
