Meal #58: Lunch

Chicken and jalapeno wrap with tomato soup, Pret A Manger, Oxford, UK

This was the first not-so-good meal I’ve had from Pret.  They let me down.  This burrito-like wrap was bad news from the beginning and I should’ve known.  You get what you deserve.  The sauce was way too sweet, and not nearly spicy enough to balance.  Just poorly done in general.  The soup was good though, I’ve had it before.

English cheddar and pickle sandwich with tomato soup, Pret A Manger, Oxford, UK

Very nice lunch! The soup was served very hot- perfect. I really loved the soup because it had toothsome bits of onions, garlic, and fresh tomato in the really fresh, perfectly seasoned tomato base. The sandwich was very unique. I’m still not sure what “pickle” is exactly. I would describe it as a sweet, slightly vinagary carmelized onion or maybe fig …chutney? Not sure , but it was a really nice fruity complement to the properly stinky, mature English cheddar. The coffee was energizing and good, as usual 🙂

Meal #56: Lunch

Steak and ale pie with mash and veg, The Chequers, Oxford, UK
Obviously, I didn’t eat the chair; however, I thought it should be included in this photo so you can absorb this English pub in all its’ charming glory. The pie was salty, beefy and slightly sweet from the ale in the gravy. The pastry was crisp, tender, and flaky. Surprisingly, the veg was very good- not overcooked, just perfectly steamed. The mashed potatoes could’ve used a little more love, but overall this was a very pleasing lunch. The cask ale was a perfect accompaniment. It’s bitter-caramel notes complemented the pie nicely.

Meal #54: Lunch

Greek panini, small sandwich shop, Oxford, UK

I had a Greek panini from a small shop on the High Street.  It was sort of lack luster, but terrible.  It had salami and feta and tomato and olives but there was no sauce, and the grill didn’t properly heat it up, so it was mostly cold.  I ate it though, for the nuritiousment it provided to my body.

Ham and cheese on strange bread with a coffee, Oxford, UK
There was way to much bread on this sandwich!  It was all bread I think.  No sauce, just ham and cheese with a bit of greens.  Not very good.

Delicious lunch dessert!

Meal #51: Lunch

A picnic lunch, Oxford, UK
While I was working on school stuff, Charity went out on the town to gather ingredients for a proper English picnic.  She got a baguette, some salad, raspberries, cherry tomatoes, green olives, soft cheese triangles, a bottle of cheap cider, and packet of Hobnobs, (the best biscuits ever).  Unfortunetly, it started raining, that’s English weather for ya.  So we ate it in my dorm room.  It was still really tasty, though not as scenic.

Meal #49: Lunch

Chicken starter, Majliss, Oxford, UK
This is just the starter that Charity and I had.  Our dinner was a huge and amazing Indian meal that we shared with our friends Robbie and Cara.  Everything we ate was amazing, though I cannot identify everything in the pictures.  Charity and I shared a menu for two, which included a giant number of dishes.  The four of us ate like Indian royalty, and still had leftovers to take home in the end!

Meal #46: Lunch

Chicken bacon club with sea salt crisps, Pret A Manger, Oxford, UK
My beautiful wife has arrived in Oxford!  From now on, my description will come first, and then Charity’s just below.

For her first lunch in Oxford with me, I had to take Charity to Pret A Manger, where else?  I had the always amazing chicken bacon club, as previously described, it did not disappoint.  There were no especially good soups today, so I accompanied my club with a bag of sea salt crisps.  Everything was tasty and fresh as always.

Smoked river trout sandwich with a nectarine and coffee, Pret A Manger, Oxford, UK

My first meal in Oxford! It was simple and lovely. The smoked English river Trout was mild and delicious, especially with the horseradish mayonnaise to brighten it up. The coffee was really good- I know it’s a strange combination, but I really needed some caffeine. The nectarine was sweet and sour perfection. Overall, a great first meal in Oxford!

Meal #42: Lunch

Prosciutto and tomato sandwich with mushroom risotto, Pret A Manger, London, UK

Pret A Manger, what else would I eat?  I just love Pret so much, how will I live without it back in DeKalb?  This was a truly great sandwich.  Silky prosciutto with fresh tomato and lettuce and a bit of mayonnaise, all on an artisan baguette.  The risotto was great as well, very smooth and extra mushroomy.  The grape and elderflower soda was crisp and floral and refreshing, as always.

Meal #39: Lunch

Cheddar and pickle sandwich with tomato soup, Pret A Manger, Oxford, UK

Another amazing lunch from Pret A Manger! Not really French at all, but so good all the same. This was a very good cheddar and pickle sandwich with a cup of smooth and tasty tomato soup. I normally don’t like tomato soup, but today I decided to be brave and put all my trust in the Pret. It paid off, this was a very simple but very tasty lunch.
