We made it to our cute Airbnb in Sofia, Bulgaria. We got here pretty late and we were tired and hungry. Our Airbnb host said the pizza place around the corner is good. Easy decision π
Pretty terrible Caesar salad. The dressing was oddly sweet π
Decent pizza. We had the “flat sausage and green pepper” aka, pepperoni and green pepper. It wasn’t bad. Not the best, but not bad.
Refreshing, easy to drink, local beer. Best part of the meal π
With tip is cost about $15. Adam says he really likes the receipt and dollar amount on the blog, so I’m going to keep mentioning it π
Macedonian countrysideΒ
Before we left Skopje, we took one last stroll through the Old Bazaar. We passed a tiny stall with a woman making pastries. Of course, I had to get one… or two π
The baklava wasn’t my favorite. It didn’t have much flavor, mostly just sweet. A little boring. BUT the doughnut type thing (maybe called Tulumba?), was delicious! It was light and crunchy, more churro than doughnut, eggy and only lightly sweet. We were surprised by how much we liked it.

Super cute Macedonian village

We’ve seen lots of these on the highway, but it’s hard to get a good picture.
Sunflower fields π
Great local wine and beer.
Tsatziki
Shopska salad with super-salty, creamy, awesome feta!
Smokey Kebap
Adam had the veal soup. It was not bad. Not my fave.
Espresso. Always. All this for about $20 π―
Thinking of Daddy…
Macedonian dinner
Tough guy π
Beautiful, bustling square.
Cool fountain. Kids loved it. They couldn’t stay out of it. Some parents were ok with and others were not! π
Mother Therese memorial house. She was born in Skopje.

Old, Ottoman inn turned restaurant. Very atmospheric.

Macedonian salad- tomato, feta, parsley, onion, and roasted peppers in a light olive oil dressing. Delicious!
garlic bread
Stuffed grape leaves and roasted pork ribs with potatoes. We did t love either of these dishes. They were served warm-ish which didn’t help. Honestly though, I think the biggest problem was the huge, delicious salad we ate first. We just weren’t that hungry by the time the mains arrived.
Where the heck are we?Β
Lunch in Skopje
After an easy drive to Skopje, Macedonia, we went to one of the most popular lunch spots- Kebapclinica Destan, a kebap house.
Pleasantly bitter local lager.
Grilled spicy peppers, onions, baked beans, chewy Pita bread, creamy baked beans, and sheeps milk yogurt- all the fixings for our grilled kebap.
Grilled kebap- spiced, grilled beef. Mmm! our bill came to about β¬16- expensive compared to Kosovo.
The famous Art Bridge- lined with sculptures of famous artists from Macedonia.
They even honor teachers… what a difference from America where most people think we’re “overpaid babysitters” π₯
Because this isn’t creepy at all…
We couldn’t miss the local brewery π
On to Macedonia π²π°Β
We finished all our fruits then hit the road.
But first we had to stop at the cafe around the corner for another world famous Kosovar macchiato. They’re truly excellent! These two set us back a whole Euro. That’s right. Just β¬1!!!
After the coffee shop, I couldn’t resist the sweet smell of yeast and gluten… I popped into a bakery and picked three items really quickly. Again, unbelievable prices. All this for just β¬0.50! We especially loved the sesame “bagel”. It was slightly sweet, yeasty, the sesame was pronounced and toasty, and pleasantly chewy. Mmmm!
This was a light and airy, slightly sweet sesame bun filled with a creamy-crumbly tangy cheese. Excellent.
This bread tasted similar to brioche- rich and buttery-sweet. It was filled with Nutella. Very, very good for dessert, but far too sweet for our breakfast tastes. I’m sure most people would love it though.
I bought these gorgeous raspberries from a cute little kid along the border. We were waiting in line and he approached the car… I couldn’t resist, especially when he said just β¬1 for two! I bought four. I always limit myself with red raspberries because they’re so expensive. Tomorrow, I will feast ππ
Bad picture of the cute raspberry monger at the border.
Cool city, yummy food, fun times

Crates for days! π³

Adam liked this way too much!
We bought delicious roasted pumpkin seeds for just β¬.50.

Excellent aperol spritz at Soma Book Station.
The best bread we’ve had yet- perfectly chewy and warm inside a crispy, crackly, smoky outside π
Housemade cheeses- spicy pepper, carrot, and parsley. We like the spicy best.
Big fresh salad. Yum!!!
Mixed grill platter for two- not bad, but definitely not the best grilled meats we’ve had. These were a little under seasoned and over cooked.
All that, at one of the fanciest restaurants in Pristina, plus wine and beer for just β¬32
Fun street games for locals. We watched for at least fifteen minutes. So funny!
The National Library- considered by some to be the ugliest building in the world. It kid of looks like a spider trapped under a net π
Billy Kleentone π€£
Yummy lunch
I gave up and gave the queen her throne.
Excellent macchiato for just β¬1!
Mushroom soup
Adam had the egg and cheese sandwich- very good. It was fresh and saucy with a basil mayo.
I had the crunchy zucchini and veggie sandwich. The zucchini was amazingly crunchy with a corn flake coating. Mmmm! The crunchy potato wedges served with out sandwiches were also really good!
All of that for under $15!!! Unreal.
They forgot to tell their cat that I’m allergic and wearing a black dress today… πππ» She’s very sweet though π
Fresh and fruity
The fruits and veggies are so super fresh and tasty here! I bought the apricots and the melon straight from the source…the farmer π¨βπΎThe melon was so fragrant and sweet. It almost tasted like passion fruit, so flavorful!
I’ve been craving fruits and veggies. We don’t normally eat so much meat and heavy food. I think veggies for lunch are in order as well…
