Lunch

Lunch

I’m so glad we stopped at Aldi on our way home yesterday. We’re tired after almost 36 hours of travel in just two days. I made a salad of red lettuce and arugula with cucumbers, red bell pepper, and tomatoes with a German sausage called Debrecziner that tasted like Kielbasa, Parmesan, and a white balsamic vinaigrette. A toasted piece of brown bread with butter and salt rounded out the simple lunch.

Second breakfast

After leaving the airport, we enjoyed a lovely drive from Munich to our new home in Landsberg am Lech, about an hour’s drive. Surprisingly, Germany looks a lot like Illinois! We stopped by the local Aldi and picked up a few staples before heading to our new home. We love our new place! It’s clean and modern with a beautiful garden and two very friendly cats Franzy and Henry. (Pics coming soon)

We were both tired and hungry, so I threw together a quick second breakfast- toasted brown bread with tomatoes, herbed cheese (similar to Borsin), Gutsdammer cheese (similar to Swiss cheese), and a few slices of salami. Quick and tasty! We ate in the garden 🙂

We’re back!

And we’re off… we started this long journey in beautiful Charlotte, North Carolina. We had a LONG layover, so we decided to venture out of the airport and into the city. Good call! We had lunch at an awesome restaurant called King’s Kitchen – a ministry serving the poor and recovering homeless and addicts. The entire restaurant is run by people in training to become professional chefs, bartenders, and servers. The food and service was impeccable!

We started with good old fashioned Southern sweet tea and pimento cheese served with fresh King’s Bakery sour dough bread… welcome to the SOUTH ya’ll! Next we had the “meat and three” of the day- pan fried chicken with Mac ‘n’ cheese, green beans, creamed corn, and perfect biscuits. Wow! The fried chicken was just like my grandma used to make- light and crispy!  The Mac ‘n’ cheese was oh so cheesy. The creamed corn was fresh and sweet, and the green beans were stewed, rich and porky- just the way my mom likes them 🙂 We wanted to try one of their mile high pies, but we were too full! What a great start to an awesome summer!

A loss of data.

I am on day 6 of my adventure in Europe and I am finally drafting my first post.  Well, not exactly.

The goal of this blog was to photographically document every meal that I will consume in Europe.  I began my trip fully commited to this plan.  I photographed my first meal, airplane food, and described it with wit and vigur.  I even photographed and drafted a description for my second meal on the plane, as well as snack in Dublin, my first dinner here at Oriel College, and even my first breakfast.  So where are these awesome posts?  Well… long story short, I lost some data.  Those memories are gone forever. Alas, to travel.

Upset by my losses, I have since been less vigil, and as such, I’ve forgotten to document a couple meals.  I am newly confident that I can still have a great result from this project.  So, here comes meal number “one.”
