After lots of walking we were tired and thirsty. We stopped for a short rest. I had ginger ale. Adam had a Coke. We also had a couple chocolates and a nibble of strawberry licorice that I forgot to photograph- sorry:/
More Bavarian charm
After a delightful morning celebrating Brewers Day, we headed to Hofbrauhaus for lunch. We started with a wonderfully fresh bread basket, then we ordered two classics- boiled pig knuckle and roast suckling pig. The knuckle was a little flabby, but it tasted good- much like corned beef. The suckling pig was ok- a little bland. I didn’t really like the dumpling- it was oddly chewy and dense. The beer however, was excellent 🙂
We finished our meal with coffee and apple strudel. Both of which were perfect!
Brauertag Munich
OMG! What luck! We didn’t realize it, but we were headed to Munich on one of the best days of the year- Braurtag, Brewers Day! All the Munich breweries take a sacred oath to uphold the beer purity laws of 1487, Reinheitsgebot, which dictate the ingredients that are allowed to be in beer. The priest gives his blessing AND….. Let the FREE BEER flow!
We happened upon the celebration in the Viktualienmarkt. DREAM come true! There were men in lederhosen, women and children in traditional Bavarian dresses, three brass bands, dancers, whip cracking guys, spectacularly decorated horses and carriages, and FREE BEER! I feel so thankful that we experienced such an awesome display of Bavarian culture. Blessed!
Off to Munich
Afternoon snack
Lunch and castles
After a carriage ride up the mountain to the castle, we took the long hike down to Fussen city center. We had a wonderful lunch at a cafe in Fussen. Adam had the Schnitzel Cordon Bleu- pork schnitzel with ham and cheese fried inside and crisp-fried potatoes. It was really delicious. Rich, but very good. I had the pan-fried trout with steamed vegetables in a lemon cream sauce and crunchy bits of bacon over the top. It, too was excellent. The fish was cooked perfectly- tender and flaky inside, crisp on the outside. Yum!
So many castles… Thanks Ludwig II :)
Post game revelry
After the game (Germany won, 1-0), we headed to the city square. Germans were celebrating as if they’d won the World Cup! We had dinner at a lovely outdoor cafe. I had the large salad of the day with pesto tomato soup. The salad was great. Very fresh and flavorful. The soup was pretty bad- very salty and katsupy. Adam had a steak with fried onions and potatoes. His was delicious! The potatoes were crisp and seasoned beautifully. The steak was tender and juicy! Awesome 🙂
