Dinner close to home

It was rainy all day today, so we decided to stay in, rest, and relax. We lounged, read, and watched movies all day:) Finally, we decided to get out of the house, at least for a little while.

We went just down the street to a Chinese restaurant- we’ve both been craving Asian food. Unfortunately, I don’t think our carvings were satisfied :/

We started with hot and sour soup-good. We also had the “fried crab” which we hoped would be crab rangoons- nope. They were battered, fried pieces of imitation crab, ew! Adam had vegetable fried rice and Sichuan chicken. The rice seemed greasy and lightly warmed. The chicken was primarily very salty. It lacked any real flavor. I had the chicken curry fried noodles. They were ok. A little on the bland side, but with some hot sauce they weren’t bad. To drink I had Coke. Adam had Kofola. Then we shared a Mattoni- sparkling mineral water.

Lesson: eat Czech food in Czech. It’s delicious.

Dinner at home

Gary was in the mood for a burger, so I made open-face, Greek inspired burgers. I put lots of garlic and herbs in ground pork then pan fried patties. I served the burgers with a fresh salad of arugula and baby greens in a lemon olive oil dressing with roasted beets. Each burger was served with tzatziki, cucumber, onion, tomato, and kalamata olives.

I’m a really good cook 🙂

Lunch in Kutna Hora

Although the church is supremely creepy, the town is quite pleasant! We enjoyed walking through the quaint streets. We stopped at a lovely garden restaurant for lunch.

I had grilled pork with a creamy, spicy sauce and French fries. Adam had roast beef with peppers and onions and fried potato wedges. Neither of us were thrilled with our meal- they were mediocre. We know how good Czech food can be 🙂

Bone chapel

For Gary and Aimee’s last day, we headed to Kutna Hora- a Czech must-see tourist attraction.

We had a snack on the way. Grilled steak chips and Kofola- the communist answer to the people’s desire for “capitalist Coke” 🙂 We both really like Kofola. It isn’t as sweet as Coke and it has a pleasant, more herbal profile. Yum!

The church houses the bones of over 40,000 victims of the plague. Monks artfully arranged the bones to honor the dead and to remind us that we are all equal before the throne of God. Personally, I think it’s pretty darn creepy. Inside the church, it was cool and damp and had a very odd, musty odor- eeek!

Family dinner

After a wonderful day hiking and sightseeing, we went back home for Sunday family dinner with our host family! Maria made a delicious vegetable and chicken couscous. It was light and served at room temperature- perfect for a hot summer day. For dessert she served amazing fresh fruit dumplings with apricots and blackberries from her garden!! I really loved the dumplings. The dough was wrapped around the fresh fruit centers. It was mild and pleasantly chewy. They tasted similar to fruit pie. After dinner we went for a refreshing swim in the indoor pool. What a fun day!!!

Phonetastrophy

Unfortunately, my phone jumped into some water and is no longer working. All the videos, pictures, everything… Lost. Sorry for the radio silence- I’ve been grieving. 😦

My phone took the plunge on Saturday. I will do my best to describe my meals sans photos.

Breakfast: double shot of espresso with steamed milk, bread with butter and jam, and cherries. Delightful!

Lunch: We enjoyed another excellent Czech meal. Adam had the “cowboy” steak- grilled steak with a spicy garlic sauce, dumplings, and green beans. I had the “classic” steak with paprika, roasted potatoes, and green beans. Everything was quite tasty.

Snack: After going to the Alphonse Mucha museum, we went to the Municipal building that he designed and decorated. We shared a decadent slice of chocolate cake. Adam had an iced macchiato and I enjoyed an iced latte. The building was so beautiful, my phone decided to RIP, right then and there.

Dinner: I made sautéed zucchini, mushrooms, and onions with herb roasted chicken thighs and potatoes. It was ok. I wasn’t in a very good mood, so I couldn’t enjoy it 😦

Luckily, the Mucha museum was splendid!!!

Dinner- just the two of us

Gary and Aimee were more tired than hungry, so we dropped them at home then walked down to our lovely, local restaurant.

We enjoyed excellent Czech beers, an appetizer of Tuna Carpaccio, and shared the Sous Vide chicken breast with garlic-herb butter and garlic-bacon green beans. Wow! The beer was cold and refreshing. The entree was perfectly seasoned and flavorful.

All in all we had: 5 beers, 1 appetizer, and 1 generous entree for just $24!!!! Talk about affordable! Prague is awesome.
