Mitte Rhein

After saying goodbye to Annette, we jumped on the train back to Dusseldorf. It’s a beautiful ride along the Mitte Rhein or “middle Rhein” region. We were headed straight home, but after passing a few adorable half-timbered villages, we decided to make multiple stops along the way. We stopped in four villages- St. Goar, Spay, Rhens, Boppard and stayed in each for about an hour. We had great wine and enjoyed great views!

For lunch, Annette packed us yummy sandwiches. We stopped at a cafe overlooking the Rhein for tasty cold beers to compliment our sandwiches.

Dinner with friends

We met Annette at the train station in Obervesal and she drove us to her home in Kastelaun. She kindly offered to host us for the night 🙂 We had a great time getting to know Annette and her children, Anna and Jacob.

I made dinner and Annette provided spectacular local wines and spirits! I made crispy roasted chicken quarters with thyme and lemon, garlic carrots and green beans, and roasted garlic mashed potatoes. They requested a typical American dinner and I thought the menu was both typical and delicious! We completed the meal with a Florida classic- Key Lime Pie!!!

Snacks at sunset

We walked to the Rhein, found a cozy spot, and had an evening picnic! There were tons of people out enjoying the great weather- awesome people watching 🙂 We had cold beers, pretzels, bell peppers, cheese, and strawberry wafer cookies. Sorry I forgot a pic of the food:/

Ooo veggie!

I made egg fried rice with a delicious garlic- ginger stir fry of zucchini, green beans, mushrooms, bok choi, and onions. Served with an icy, Czech Pilsner Urquell. I seriously can not get enough Asian food and veggies! Nom, nom!
